The autumn term will have been a lot of hard work for all of us. Academies will all have been busy producing their company accounts and undergoing annual audits – a stressful time for many! Lots of things have been happening and it’s good to look back and reflect on events.
In October we had NASBM trustees’ meetings and Support Staff Awards in London, plus our first LASBM conference of the academic year; in November there was the NASBM National Conference and the Academies Show, both held in Birmingham; in December the first of a series of NASBM Q&A Roadshows was held in Lancaster. Although severe weather impacted on attendance, the event went down well with those who did manage to make it and the expert panel of representatives from NASBM, the Education Funding Agency, PS Financials and TES Foundation was well received and thoroughly grilled.
I am pretty sure that everyone working in school business management struggles to find the time to get out of school and I am no exception. Sometimes I think it’s just not worth it, knowing that I will have to find the time to catch up on my work if I attend an event. But I do believe that without enrichment activities we can become very insular and unable to see the wood for the trees. It’s good to spend time with colleagues who have the same issues as we do – sharing experiences can help us to find effective solutions and look at things in new ways.
You will see from our News page that LASBM has now become a limited company, which we hope will enable us to enhance our offer to the group and help us to become more effective. We will continue to share updates at our conferences and look forward to receiving feedback from the group.
Don’t forget to put dates of forthcoming events in your diaries – the conferences will be held on 12 February and 14 May and the summer ball on 13 June. We look forward to seeing you at one or more of these events.
Finally, as we move into 2014, I would like to wish all our members a very Happy New Year!
